Unlocking Futures: The IB Diploma Programme at MIS

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at Mussoorie International School (MIS) stands as a beacon, dedicated to preparing students not only for academic success but also to be active contributors to a global society. This future-ready program is designed to cultivate an inquiring mindset, ignite a thirst for knowledge, and equip students to not only excel in their careers but also lead meaningful lives.

Understanding the IB Diploma Programme:

The IB Diploma Programme caters to students aged 16 to 19, offering an academically challenging and balanced education with final examinations. The program's holistic approach addresses the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being of students. Its global recognition and respect from leading universities attest to its efficacy in nurturing well-rounded individuals.

The Core Components:

  1. Extended Essay (EE): The EE is an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject, emphasizing independent research and effective communication. Students dedicate 40+ hours to the essay over twelve months, promoting a profound engagement with personal research.
  2. Theory of Knowledge (ToK): ToK centers around the question, "How do we know?" Through critical thinking and analysis of Ways of Knowing, students develop proficiency in formulating arguments and analyzing knowledge claims. The course includes critical analysis questions called Knowledge Issues, with students completing one hundred hours over two years.
  3. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): CAS complements the academic program by emphasizing ethical principles, providing opportunities for self-determination, collaboration, accomplishment, and enjoyment. The three strands—creativity, activity, and service—engage students in a holistic way, fostering personal development alongside academic pursuits.

The Curriculum:

DP students choose one course from each of five subject groups, ensuring a broad understanding of language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. The curriculum offers courses at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), allowing students to explore disciplines of interest more deeply.

Course Selection:

Students embark on the course selection process in their sophomore year, considering personal strengths, future education, and career plans. The IB Diploma requires students to follow six courses, covering language A, a second language, individuals and societies, experimental sciences, mathematics, and arts or a subject from groups 1-4.

Assessment:

Assessment in the IB Diploma Programme includes written examinations at the program's end, marked by external examiners. Internal assessments, initially marked by teachers and moderated externally, contribute to the overall grade. Students can earn up to three additional points for combined results on TOK and the EE. The diploma is awarded to students scoring at least 24 points, with a maximum of 45 points attainable.

In essence, the IB Diploma Programme at MIS is a transformative educational journey, shaping students into well-rounded individuals ready to tackle the challenges of higher education and contribute meaningfully to a global society.
